HYROX performance boosters: what actually works?
Caffeine, creatine, beetroot, beta-alanine and bicarbonate all get called “legal enhancers.” Some have strong evidence. Others are useful only in specific situations. And the highest-value performance tools are often carbs, sleep and consistent training.
The Australian Institute of Sport classifies caffeine, creatine, bicarbonate, beta-alanine and beetroot/nitrate among evidence-based performance supplements when used in appropriate scenarios. That does not mean every athlete needs them—or that they all help HYROX equally.
What is actually worth considering?

1. Caffeine: the strongest acute option
Caffeine has some of the clearest evidence for improving endurance and high-intensity intermittent performance. It can reduce perceived exertion and help athletes sustain effort, but individual response varies substantially.
A common sports-performance range is roughly 2–6 mg/kg taken before exercise, but higher doses do not necessarily improve performance and are more likely to cause side effects. For HYROX, the practical question is not “how much can I tolerate?” but “what is the lowest dose that helps without hurting sleep, heart rate, stomach or pacing?”
2. Creatine: better viewed as training support
Creatine monohydrate has strong evidence for improving strength, power and repeated high-intensity efforts. That makes it relevant to HYROX training, especially for sled work, lunges, wall balls and repeated high-output sessions.
It is less compelling as a direct endurance enhancer. Think of creatine as something that may improve the quality of repeated hard training rather than as a magic race-morning boost. The best-studied form is creatine monohydrate.
3. Beetroot / dietary nitrate: promising, but not universal
Dietary nitrate can improve exercise economy in some athletes and may support certain endurance and high-intensity efforts. Beetroot concentrates are commonly used because they provide a more predictable nitrate dose than ordinary juice.
The response is not identical for everyone. Well-trained athletes can be less responsive, and product nitrate content matters. It is worth trialing in training before deciding it belongs in your race routine.
4. Beta-alanine: useful only if you plan ahead
Beta-alanine works through increased muscle carnosine, so its potential benefit comes from consistent use over time—not from taking a scoop right before the start. It is most relevant to repeated hard efforts where buffering capacity matters.
The familiar tingling sensation can be harmless but uncomfortable. That sensation is not proof the supplement is improving performance.
5. Sodium bicarbonate: evidence-backed, but high-risk for your stomach
Bicarbonate can improve some high-intensity exercise by helping buffer acidity. It also has one of the most obvious practical drawbacks: GI distress. A protocol that works on paper can ruin a race if it sends you looking for a bathroom.
If you use it at all, rehearse the exact product, timing, food and fluid strategy during training first.
6. Carbohydrates: less exciting, more important
A HYROX race combines sustained running with repeated high-intensity stations. Starting well-fueled and using a sensible carbohydrate plan is likely to matter more than adding another powder to an already complicated supplement stack.
The biggest race-week mistake is often chasing a new “performance enhancer” while under-fueling training or changing nutrition at the last minute.
7. Sleep: the performance aid nobody can sell you
Sleep supports recovery, reaction time, decision-making, training adaptation and perceived effort. One of the ironies of aggressive caffeine use is that it can improve one session while damaging the sleep that supports the next one.
If you are choosing between another supplement and consistently better sleep, the boring option is often the better investment.
8. Carbon shoes: potentially useful, but HYROX is not a road race
Modern carbon-plated racing shoes can improve running economy for some athletes. But HYROX also asks you to push sleds, carry weight, lunge and perform burpees. Stability, traction and comfort under fatigue matter.
Test race shoes during compromised-running sessions—not just a fresh treadmill run—before deciding they are faster for your complete race.
What I would prioritize for HYROX
Start with the fundamentals: training consistency, carbohydrate availability, hydration and sleep. If you already have those in place, caffeine is the most obvious acute option to test. Creatine is a strong daily training supplement for athletes who tolerate it. Beetroot/nitrate can be worth experimenting with. Beta-alanine and bicarbonate are more specialized and make sense only when you understand the protocol and have tested tolerance.
Do not stack several unfamiliar products on race morning. Change one variable at a time in training so you can tell whether it actually helps.
Use sports supplements deliberately
Supplement contamination is a real anti-doping risk. Competitive athletes should use independently batch-tested products where possible and check current anti-doping guidance. Anyone with a medical condition, medication interaction, pregnancy, caffeine sensitivity or significant GI issues should speak with a qualified clinician or sports dietitian before experimenting with performance supplements.
